Program overview

This program develops competencies used to operate and travel rail plant and track vehicles in accordance with safeworking requirements, regulatory requirements and workplace procedures. It covers accessing the rail track to run a track vehicle within a defined worksite and operating the relevant class of road-rail or on-track equipment.

The correct unit combination depends on the plant being operated, the intended RIW job role, the applicable rail network and the participant’s existing competencies.

Important qualification information

The nationally recognised units delivered through this program will depend on the type of rail plant being operated and the participant’s required job role. Participants who successfully complete the applicable training and assessment requirements will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units achieved. Completion does not automatically authorise a participant to operate all types of rail plant or provide an RIW job role, network authority, high-risk work licence or employer approval. Additional supervised experience, verification of competency, site induction, medical, licensing and rail-network requirements may apply.

RIW and plant-role requirements

The National Plant Matrix distinguishes between Rail Bound Plant Operator, Rail Bound Plant Operator Light, Rail Bound Plant Operator Medium/Heavy and Road-Rail Plant Operator roles. Completing a unit or grouped program does not automatically establish every role.

Participants and employers should confirm the required job role with the rail transport operator responsible for the intended work. Machine-specific competency, plant licensing, a Category 1 medical or other network and employer requirements may apply.

Who this program is suited to

  • Rail-bound plant operators
  • Road-rail vehicle operators
  • Light on-track equipment operators
  • Medium and heavy on-track equipment operators
  • Civil plant operators moving into rail environments

Delivery and assessment

Delivery and assessment arrangements are confirmed with each participant or employer before enrolment. The final program will reflect the training product requirements, participant experience, workplace access, available equipment and the practical evidence required for assessment.

Calibre may use a combination of trainer-led learning, workplace activities, practical demonstration, questioning, written tasks and evidence gathered in an appropriate work environment. The delivery method, expected duration and assessment requirements will be set out in the applicable course information and enrolment documentation.

Entry and workplace requirements

Before enrolment, Calibre will confirm whether the program is suitable for the participant. This may include reviewing existing competencies, language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills, physical or operational requirements, prerequisite units, access to a suitable workplace, plant or equipment, and any identification, PPE, medical or rail-network requirements.

Final RIW role eligibility and authority to operate remain subject to the applicable National Plant Matrix, rail-network rules, medical requirements, employer requirements and any machine-specific competency or licence.
